Education: it's the ladder that lifts people to success, and it's the ladder that will lift Nevada out of its recession. There is no more important issue for our future than the quality of our local school system. That's why, beginning Sunday, News 3 is teaming up with NBC News to bring you Education Nation: NBC's continuing conversation about education, and the solutions to make it better. Beginning Sunday morning, visit MyNews3.com for a live streaming webcast of a teacher town hall, brought to you live from Rockefeller Plaza in New York City.
Clark County School Superintendent Dwight Jones is in New York for the three-day event. We'll hear from him live Monday morning on "Wake Up With The Wagners," and then Monday evening, see how local teachers are joining together on the web to get the school supplies and help they need.
Our coverage will be supplemented by many interesting stories from NBC News on the state of education; we'll go back to see how a teacher we met in 2007 still has her heart in the classroom; how parents now have the power to force underperforming schools to change, and how the founder of Facebook is putting his millions into improving education.
News 3 anchor Jessica Moore will sit down with local principals at five underperforming schools to see how their "turnaround" is progressing: they are the 5 schools that saw complete overhauls over the summer, with the goal of ensuring student success. All year long, News 3, together with our media partner, Las Vegas Sun.com, have been granted exclusive access to these schools. This week, we'll hear from them what's working, and what isn't.
There will be much more over the week and throughout the year. News 3: your Education Nation station.
