LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Although tax day is still four months away, now is the time to get your receipts and documents in order for the 2011 tax year.
In this season of giving, if you make a charitable donation, remember that you qualify for a deduction only if you itemize your return. Also, there is one deduction that is often overlooked: the earned income tax credit. With changes in the economy, more people than ever might qualify.
"People with incomes up to around $49,000 can get this credit and the credit in some instances can be as much as over $5,000," said IRS Spokeswoman Dianne Besunder.
There's an interactive tool on the irs website that can tell you if you're eligible for that tax credit. And remember, if you refinanced your mortgage this year, closing costs are also deductible.
