Horrible Conditions
YourVoice: My grandson attends CT Sewell in Henderson Nv. He has complained multiple times of feces in the sink and on the bathroom floor and entry way, in the boys restroom. This is a health violation and a neglect on the part of the principal and faculty. Dr. Buck has been on television as a principal for an award winning school and serves up four pages of homework nightly. All the while this school is in shambles and is a hazard to all the children who attend there. I can only imagine what else is going on in this facility. They seem to ignore the concerns of these matters.

Why can't we pay for tutoring programs?
YourVoice: I want to know why the school district is discriminating against the students who don't receive free or reduced lunch by denying them the opportunity to the tutoring programs run by the Title 1. There are more openings than students who do take advantage of the free tutoring program, they won't even let you pay for your child to go, so if they need tutoring and they don't get free or reduced lunch, there are two options. Sign up for free or reduced lunch or send your child to a non-Title-1 run agency. It just isn't fair and we say that we put kids first. Where is all that extra federal money then if the programs are not full, where's the money?

Stop teaching Mexico's Pledge of Allegiance
YourVoice: Why is Mexico's Pledge of Allegiance being taught in American schools? What a slap in the face to America Citizens. If Mexicans are so devoted to Mexico why didn't they stay in their country? Did they come here for the free education and medical care? What is wrong in the Texas school system? Where is their allegiance to the USA? I am totally disgusted that this is allowed to go on in America.

CCSD Should pay for its own repairs
YourVoice: I am just wondering why Silverado High School students have to solicit for money to fix their baseball fence. Shouldn't this be CCSD's responsibility?

Children not being fed enough
YourVoice: I'm having a problem on the amounts that my grandchildren, along with many others, are being served for lunch in their schools. My 2 come home always hungry, and it worries me because I know for a fact that for many children here in the valley this is the "ONLY" form of food they are receiving for the day. We, the people, talk about improving the education programs so our children can learn, but how can a child even "Focus" on their work if they are hungry???? The politicians really need to do something about this- never minded the excuses of "obesity" is why the schools are controlling children’s amounts. Geez, charging $2.00 plus for nothing but a 4x2 inch burrito (with nothing else) isn’t going to cause a child to be "Obes"!!!!

Tell us before you ban it
YourVoice:
So, after shopping through the summer for just the right clothes for my daughter to start her first year of middle school, they make an anouncement a week after school has already started to say "oh, by the way, you are not allowed to wear any clothing with a number on it." What? Upon contacting the school, I was told that currently ALL numbers are gang related and that it is for my child's safety. Understood, but why not let them know BEFORE school starts? Before unemployed/under-employed parents spend there school clothes budget on clothing WITH numbers.

CCSD Won't do the right thing
YourVoice:
We have been trying to get a zone variance for our son. We have a split household and we have 2 kids half the week and 4 the full week. We have requested several times to get a zone variance for them all to attend the same high school. We have been denied by Foothill, Basic, and even been denied an appeal. So now Clark County School District wants us to take out kids to 2 different high schools. Everybody we have talked to within the school district said it should get approved. We went into Foothill where they said they never received the request. 2 days later the mysterious lost request showed up with the principals signature on it who denied ever receiving it. So now we head to Basic. Basic denies us literally right after handing them the request. They said your wasting your time. Dont even bother appealing it. Well we did. And of coarse today in the mail comes the denial letter from the Area Service Center 2. Not one person would give us a reason. Yet my old neighbor was able to go wherever she wanted because she was a basketball star. This is why CCSD has a bad rap because of the inability to do the right thing. Way to go CCSD. We miss Walt...

Stop putting down teachers
YourVoice:
I really hope that I'm taking this the wrong way. I heard you mention that the staion owner, Jim Rogers, was questioning Nevada State Teacher Credibility. It came across as though he thinks teachers just roll out of bed one day and decide to teach. I have been in this district for 9 years and I know there are some 'bad' teachers. However, there are far more good, excellent, and outstanding teachers that should be recognized! As for what kind of tests and criteria need to be met prior to teaching, it's far more than he is obviously aware of. I'm tired of teachers getting a bad rap in this city. We work so hard and are constantly put down. People need to remember that we are not miracle workers! We have students for some many hours a day...the rest is up to the parents.
--Sherri
Teacher Proficiency
YourVoice:
In response to Jim Rogers, teachers do have to take proficiency exams to determine qualifications as well as take continuing education classes. I am so tired of this "bullying" that is taking place against Public Education. Why don't the parents take some responsibility? Teachers can only do so much during the school day. They do not have any control over what happens at home. Education has to continue at home. Has Jim Rogers taught in a K-12 classroom lately?
