The Southern Nevada Health District will begin offering flu shots Oct. An annual flu vaccine is the best way to reduce your chance of getting the flu. The vaccine takes about two weeks for antibodies to develop and offers protection from seasonal flu for about a year.

Getting immunized as soon as vaccine is available ensures that protective antibodies are in place before flu activity is at its highest. Vaccination before December is best, however, as long as flu viruses are still spreading in the community, immunizations can provide protective benefit.

The viruses included in the vaccine change each year based on the strains expected to circulate during flu season. Flu vaccine will not make you sick.
