LAS VEGAS -- USO Las Vegas volunteers will be out in force Saturday at several Smith's Food and Drug stores around the valley to encourage customer to send messages of support to our service men and women serving around the world.

The specially designed and signed cards will be given to military travelers who pass through the USO Las Vegas Center at McCarran Airport. Locations include:
  • Smith's 10616 S. Eastern Avenue
  • Smith's 1000 N. Green Valley Parkway
  • Smith's 4600 E. Sunset Road
  • Smith's 6150 W. Flamingo Road
  • Smith's 55 S. Valle Verde Drive
  • Smith's 2385 E. Windmill Lane
  • Smith's 2211 N. Rampart Boulevard
  • Smith's 9750 S. Maryland Parkway
  • Smith's 7130 North Durango
Volunteers will also be asking customers for monetary donations and will provide product lists for trial size toiletry items the troops frequently use. Customers are being asked to purchase these products and snacks, then give them to the volunteers.

"We have a tremendous respect for the USO and the comfort its volunteers provide for our service men and women and their families," said Marsha Gilford, Smith's Vice President of Public Affairs. "In addition to this in-store event, any change contributed to the plastic boxes found at our check stands from June 17th to July 14th will be part of the $2 million committed by the Kroger Co. in 2012 to support USO programs throughout the world."

Volunteers will be at the Smith's stores from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Since the July 4th holiday is just a few days away, volunteers will encourage customers to express their feelings on freedom and to thank our troops for their service.

"There are some 2.4 million men and women serving in the military. Every day they protect our freedoms and our way of life," said Doug Bradford, USO Las Vegas Center Director. "Between 80 and 100 servicemembers pass through the center every day. I really hope we'll get thousands of the Smiths cards to pass on to our troops and to show our troops how much Las Vegas appreciates the sacrifices they, and their families, make on our behalf. "

Since the USO LV center at McCarran opened its doors in November 2010 nearly 50,000 military travelers have utilized the facilities' amenities. Bradford said community support is what keeps the doors open.
