Clark County Wetlands Park Nature Center seeks volunteers

LAS VEGAS -- The new Nature Center at Clark County Wetlands Park is seeking volunteers with a passion for working with families and children and the desire to be part of creating memorable experiences for visitors interacting with the many indoor exhibits.

While volunteering in the Nature Center, you will interact with visitors and promote the importance and significance of the Nature Preserve.

Some responsibilities include, but are not limited to, interacting with children and their families visiting the Nature Center, assisting with the upkeep and light cleaning of the exhibits, assisting staff with ongoing projects, and facilitating any special programs.

While volunteering at the Nature Center you will gain experience working as an informal educator, have the opportunity to share your love and enthusiasm for the natural world, and learn the power of a child's smile. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

Volunteer Exhibit Facilitators complete a Clark County Wetlands Park Orientation and Introductory Facilitation Training Course and shadow staff and other volunteers to gain knowledge and skills in facilitating exhibit experiences. Volunteer Exhibit Facilitators benefit from coaching and mentoring opportunities with staff and other volunteers, and the opportunity to learn about the plants and animals of the Nature Preserve.

Other responsibilities include:

• Know the essentials about Clark County Wetlands Park including the rules, size, and trail systems.
• Answer visitor questions, and/or refer visitors to appropriate sources of information.
• Follow all Clark County Department of Parks & Recreation policies and procedures.
• Represent Clark County Wetlands Park in a positive manner to the community.
• The potential to engage in other opportunities, with approval and training.

Volunteer Exhibit Facilitators should be enthusiastic, willing to learn, and willing to teach others by utilizing industry best practices. Experience in teaching, knowledge of local natural or cultural history, or understanding of informal science education can be helpful, but is not required.

Additional qualifications include:

• Dependability.
• Ability to stand, lift, bend and stretch.
• Ability and willingness to learn about the park to provide visitors with accurate information.
• Ability to have positive encounters with the public.
• Ability to work independently under general supervision (after training.
• Willingness to take advantage of additional professional development opportunities.

The Introductory Facilitation Training Course will equip Volunteer Exhibit Facilitators with the knowledge, practical skills, and communication strategies to engage the visitor and teach about the Clark County Wetlands Park and Nature Preserve. The six-hour training course will explore best practices for engaging the visitor informally, and developing and leading a variety of related activities.

Once Volunteer Exhibit Facilitators complete the Introductory Training Course, they will have access to readings and materials to learn the natural and cultural history of the Nature Preserve. There will also be additional opportunities for professional development.

As a Volunteer Exhibit Facilitator, you will participate in lifelong learning adventures, help to ensure stewards of tomorrow, and promote responsible use of the Clark County Wetlands Park.

Volunteer Exhibit Facilitators also help staff with a variety of projects that further the mission and mandates of Clark County Wetlands Park. This might include helping conduct typical office business, staffing the kiosk and helping with special events and taking advantage of other opportunities.
