'Baby hatches' in China have been set up so parents can effectively dump unwanted children with the knowledge they will be looked after.
The health authorities think the hatches provide a safe enivonrment for something that would happen anyway but they have been criticized by people who believe they could encourage people to give up children.
Parents place their unwanted child in a hatch, press an alarm button and then leave anonymously.
Somebody then retrieves the baby five to 10 minutes later. Most of the children abandoned have serious illnesses and disabilities.
