HARARE, Zimbabwe -- Friends and family members of a man who by all accounts had passed away were caught by surprise recently when he sprung to life and sat up in his coffin during the funeral, witnesses said.

Brighton Dama Zanthe, 34, had been declared dead and was nearly on his way to the funeral parlor when funeral-goers saw the man's legs move.

"I was the first to notice Mr. Zanthe's moving legs as I was in the queue to view his body," said mourner Lot Gaka. "At first, I could not believe my eyes, but later realized that there was indeed some movements on the body as other mourners retreated in disbelief."

After Zanthe woke, he was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Officials said he remained on life support for two days, but was later released in good health.

Strangely, "dead" people waking up has not been all that uncommon in the African nation of Zimbabwe.

Earlier this year, a woman who was believed to have died during sex woke up screaming after she was placed into a coffin. And last year, a woman who stabbed herself awoke a short time after doctors declared her "dead" at a hospital.
