LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- There is a Fresh & Easy fallout.

A few stores are closing in the valley after the British-owned grocery chain sold 150 stores nationwide to a U.S. company.

New's 3's Fatima Rahmatullah is at one Fresh & Easy in the valley that closed its doors before this announcement.

We know that two other Fresh & Easy stores will be closing down but we do not know which locations will be closing.

Kimberley Blowers shops at this Fresh & Easy off of Tropicana and Nellis. She's disappointed that a few of the stores are shutting down but hopes it's not this one.

“It's very convenient they have some international food where I can't find anywhere else. They have a British aisle and it's just up the street from my house and the prices reasonable,” Blowers said.

The British-owned grocery chain sold about 150 of their stores that aren't doing well. Two of them are in Las Vegas but according to the retail association of Nevada that's not reflective of the grocery store market here locally.

“In the last 12 months the food and beverage industry in Las Vegas and Nevada in general have been up 5.7 percent which we think which we think are very strong indicators of a good grocery market in Las Vegas,” said Bryan Wachter from the Retail Association of Nevada.

The latest numbers released in June of this year show a taxable $94 million sold compared to June of last year at $88 million.

“Grocery in general is a very competitive market. You're operating a very low margin kind of high volume situation so you're constantly new ways you're bringing in customers whether they're repeat customers or new customers,” Wachter said.

UNLV Professor Stephen Brown says the closings won't have much of an impact on our local economy.

“I would say the trickle-down effect would be fairly small. The people who do work in those stores will be laid off, but the Fresh & Easy Stores tend to have smaller staff anyways because they have self-checkout,” Brown said.

The purchase is expected to be complete in three months but until then it's business as usual.
