LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Millions of people are expected to hit the roads this holiday weekend and many of them are headed to Las Vegas, making it a busy weekend for law enforcement officers who say they are targeting drunk drivers.

News 3's Venise Toussaint has more on this busy holiday weekend.

Every 51 minutes someone dies from an alcohol related crash.

That’s according to the national highway safety administration. Busy holiday weekends like Labor Day are even more dangerous.

From a law enforcement perspective we have seen an increase in impaired driving over labor day for past several years.

Officers from Metro, Henderson and North Las Vegas are cracking down on drunk drivers this weekend and looking for signs of impairment at sobriety checkpoints.

“These check points allow us to interject and stop a drunk driver from killing themselves or others,” said Metro spokesman Bill Cassell.

According to the American Automobile Association, 34 million drivers will hit the road this weekend and hundreds will likely be impaired. Last year around this time there were four alcohol related deaths here in Nevada.
