LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- On this Christmas Eve we have the story of $300,000 cash which was lost, left behind, and literally dropped onto a cabdriver's backseat.
The money has since made its way back to the rightful owner tonight.
News 3's John Treanor talked with the Good Samaritan who avoided temptation and did the right thing. He said he did it for his daughter.
This is just one of those unbelievable stories with a genuine man.
It is a story of about cab driver, a bag of money, and there is a great ending.
Every day, during every shift in Las Vegas, 600 checker star cabs hit the streets. Thousands of people will get in and get out of cabs and go on with their lives.
But, on Monday there was something different. A call, cab, some cash, and a life changed.
Gerardo Gambia is the cab driver that found $300,000 and turned it in.
So how do you track down the most honest cabby in Las Vegas?
Just hail a cab and if you get Gambia you can ask the one question everyone is wondering. Why would you turn it in?
“Because it doesn’t belong to me,” Gambia says.
Gambia might be the most genuine guy behind the wheel and now he has one of the best stories.
He has driven taxis in Las Vegas for 13 years and the craziest thing he found before this fortune was a cell phone.
Gambia says the guy he picked up looked so average, with a ratty T-shirt and a paper bag that Gambia was more worried about him paying his fare then leaving a stack of cash.
“I don’t want to speculate on other drivers, but he's lucky he had me,” Gambia said.
That lucky guy is a professional poker player who had just cashed in big and was heading home around lunchtime.
The only time he says he has ever seen $300,000 before was in a movie.
Now on Christmas Eve with countless ears waiting to hear what might be the greatest Christmas story of the year, let’s not forget the lesson taught by a hard-working father of one from the Philippines.
