A man died in an apartment fire over the weekend. This was the third fire at that complex this year. Apartment complexes have to follow rules to keep everyone safe from fires and as News 3's Sandra Gonzalez reports, tenants should do their part too.

LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- While the cause of a fatal weekend apartment fire is yet to be officially determined, the apartment has been focus of three fires in just the past few months.

But the Las Vegas Fire Department says the fires at the Alpine Village Apartments on near Charleston and Decatur along with two other large apartment fires appear to be caused mostly by careless smoking.
Apartments are supposed to be up to code on fire safety or risk being in violation.

“If the smoke alarms don't work we'll cite them. They don't want to be cited so they check the smoke alarms themselves. Tampering with a smoke alarm gives them the right to evict you within 24 hours,” said Tim Symanski of Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

Both the city and county fire departments will work with apartment complexes to make sure they are maintaining sprinklers, hydrants, and extinguishers.

Tenants should make sure they have extinguishers near their cooking areas, and be sure they know how to use them.
