LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- The air conditioner is the one thing keeping Las Vegas residents cool as the valley hits near record temperatures.
The AC fan will be spinning all weekend long and the last thing anyone wants is for it to quit on you. News 3's Sergio Avila is outside a home to show you what you need to know to prepare.
These machines are what we rely on when the temperature gets to be unbearable so take some time while you watch this newscast to check yours out to make sure it's working properly.
Everyone knows that sweet sound of cool air running through a house but when it cuts off it can be a nightmare especially with temperatures hitting near record highs.
“Gets to the point in the day when you can't even touch the machines,” said air conditioner repairman Nick Lopata. “It's so hot.”
For Lopata it's just another day on the job.
Silverstate Refrigeration says they've prepared themselves for this weekend by stocking up on nearly three times as many supplies.
The best scenario for all residents is for Lopata not to show up at your house.
The best things you can do to keep your AC running when it's a 115 out, is of course, change out that filter. A clogged filter can cause an air conditioner's motor, or the air compressor to break down.
Also, take a quick break to head over to your thermostat and switch out the batteries because that's the brains of the whole operation and you don't want it lacking juice."
“If you feel as though it's not working properly, now is the time to make the phone call and get on the list to be seen,” Lopata said.
AC repair guys like Lopata are busiest this time of year and this weekend they expect the phone to be ringing off the hook.
Lopata says it's the thing you see and hear that is the first thing to go.
“A lot of these fan motors, it's very common,” Lopata said. “Every air conditioner loses a fan motor, at least once.”
Part of the issue is most air conditioners are designed to work at 95 degrees. In the next few days we'll reach that before noon.
Also keep in mind your machine has to be able to breathe. So if there are shrubs or debris nearby, get rid of them.
So to keep cool this weekend take a few minutes to check your machines before you have to make that emergency call.
But just know the guys like Lopata are geared up this weekend ready for the extra work.
