Steven Brooks appeared in a California court this afternoon. He's accused of several charges stemming from a run in with authorities in California. That hearing is going on as Clark County Commissioners decide what to do about Brooks' open legislative seat. Already interest is coming in from people who want to represent District 17. News 3’s Denise Rosch explains time and money could be hurdles in selecting a replacement.

LAS VEGAS -- Applications are being accepted through 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 9 from those interested in filling the vacancy in the Nevada Assembly for District 17. The vacancy was created with the expulsion today by the Assembly of Steven Brooks.

Those interested in filling the vacancy for the remainder of Brooks’ term must live in the district and be a registered Democrat, the same party as Brooks, according to state law. Applications are available at

Applicants can  verify residency within the boundaries of the Northeast Las Vegas Valley district by referring to the map on the state legislative website.

Once the application period closes, staff will review the submitted applications to ensure that candidates meet the qualifications for the office. Then a list of qualified applicants and their applications will be forwarded to the members of the County Commission, which will appoint a replacement at a public meeting.

The County Commission will meet on April 16 to make an appointment.

The last time the Commission made an appointment for a vacancy in the Nevada Legislature was in December. Commissioners appointed Henderson attorney Lesley Cohen to serve Assembly District 29 after Democratic Assemblywoman April Mastroluca resigned office shortly after winning re-election.

On Jan. 19, 2010, the County Commission appointed Stan Olsen to fill the remainder on the term of State Sen. Warren Hardy, who resigned his seat.
