LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- We turn to the story of five runaways--all children--who, under the care of the county simply walked away from a local facility. A state review found protocols were followed--but News 3’s Mackenzie Warren is digging deeper.

The bottom line for county officials is five children who they were responsible for escaped their care and that's a problem.

The question then becomes, just because rules were followed: are the best possible rules in place?

That's what Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani is asking.

“Let’s review our policies let’s make sure our --just step back--just because in compliance doesn't mean doing everything. we're not a detention facility that's true but to allow little ones to walk off like that,” Giunchigliani said.

The five siblings ran away from child haven--a county run facility back on June 11th. The kids were found the next day unharmed.

Commissioner Giunchigliani thinks it is counter-intuitive: these facilities are so hard to get in to, yet these kids were so easily able to walk away.

Giunchigliani says the fix could be as simple as requiring staff to carry a cell phone at all times. She wishes Safe Haven could have called 9-1-1 faster.

But don't expect this story to go away. Giunchigliani says the policies should be re-examined.
