LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Consumers may have to pay more money to NV Energy if the Public Utilities Commission decides to increase energy efficiency programs in Nevada.

The decision may come down to how much should come out of our wallets to spark energy conservation in our state?

Experts from the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP) are going before the Public Utilities Commission to say more money should go to NV Energy programs that include energy efficient light bulbs and appliances. But there's one catch:

SWEEP Executive Director Howard Geller says it could be costly in the next few years to subsidize energy efficient products and services. But he says those costs are outweighed by many long-term benefits.

“If we don't invest in energy efficiency, we'll be building new power plants in the not too distant future that will cost more money than the energy efficiency program,” Geller said.

NV Energy has offered the Public Utilities Commission three different conservation program options to consider. The one SWEEP supports is the most aggressive, but state's consumer advocates say costly conservation measures are unnecessary at a time when people can barely make ends meet.

Consumer advocate Michael Saunders says it's his goal to reduce short-term rate hikes. The proposal his office supports keeps conservation programs going but reduces the impact on customers' rates.

PUC will have the final say on which conservation program NV Energy gets to use and how much, if anything, it could wind up costing consumers. It is expected to reach its decision by the end of the year.

Short term rate hikes?? When have our electric rates ever be lowered after a rate hike?? NV Energy really needs government oversight. Each year they seem to spend more and more money, raise our rates, and then they cry poverty again.

We need to get these members of the public utilities commission removed!!! They buy this crap that nevada energy is feeding them every 6 months!!!! In the first place more people have moved out of nevada and they were whining about losing money because people were using less electricity. Now thier saying they might need to build more plants to keep up with the demands. Thier LIARS!!!!! You can bet the PUC is taking money too!!!!! What happened to the ried coal plant that is never used unless they need it in summer hours for peak loads!!!!! This power company is abunch of BSer's and the public utilities commission is a bunch of dumbazzez for believing the spew they keep coming out with!!!! Thier energy programs don't save crap, you mean the ones where they come out and change the thermostats!@!! Don't know who sold them that but it just makes the customer more uncomfortable!!! And most people can't work those pieces of junk!!!! Time to get petitions going to remove these public utilities commission members. We need someone in there that is intelligent enough to demand facts instead of believing them everytime they turn around. This is the 3rd story in the last month to come our about this. The first time they needed more money, the 2nd time they were okay and had a surplus because they didn't even have the quarterly figures in before they started asking for more money!!!!!! Now they need more money and thier blaming it on these energy cutting programs. Cut the programs, were not saving any money because 2-3 times a year they ask for another increase!!!!!!!!! Matbe they need to get rid of thier current accountants and get ones that actually know how to count!!!! Maybe thier unions came out and said they needed more money so they could get thier raises and bonuses!!!!!!!! Nevadans are tired of our energy costs going up everytime we turn around!!!! We cannot afford this, we turn our lights and utilities down and they want more money!!!!

Come on, its time for the changing of the guard of the PUC, and its time that NV Energy rid itself of it CEO and all other management. I'm telling you Obama supporters, no complaining when Obama raise the energy tax to pay for his pet projects.
