LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- A local couple is planning to sue the Metropolitan Police Department after their 26-year-old son was shot and killed by officers over the weekend.

Patrick Hecki, also known as Patrick Unger, died early Saturday after police say he came out of his apartment with two rifles and a handgun.

Officers opened fire when they say he pointed one of the weapons in their direction.

His parents have a different version of events. They say their son was complying with officers' orders, putting the handgun on the ground outside this complex here on Mountain Vista when he was shot.

Both Dan and Julie Unger say they saw everything that happened. They believe their son was despondent for several reasons that day. Number one: that his father, an actor, was being abandoned by Hollywood. Number two: he was depressed about his own health.

Several years ago, Patrick was accidentally shot in the face while cleaning his gun. He was disfigured and believed no one would love him anymore.

Police say they had no choice but to fire when Patrick confronted them with three weapons. His mom disagreed, saying that while he did fire a shot through the window into the parking lot, but when police arrived, he left the apartment and surrendered, putting his weapons on the ground. She says that police fired on Patrick when he stood up and the rifles fell forward.

Police came to the apartment after Julie Unger called 911. We are told, however, that she never spoke to dispatchers but kept the line open. Dispatchers on the other end of the call could hear talk about a gun.
