LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- If you weren't one of the 247 million shoppers who hit the stores this weekend, you can still get in on the good deals, because today is cyber Monday. News 3’s Michelle Velez and Krystal Allan have report on the day’s deals, and why you need to be a smart shopper online.
Today 130 million Americans are expected to shop online on this cyber Monday and spend more than a billion dollars. Companies like local online retailer Zappos are hoping to cash in.
Last check, Zappo's online sales are on track, to easily surpass last year's numbers that coming from a company spokesperson.
The call center was a buzz with activity the average call answered in about seven seconds.
Keep in mind just 5 percent of sales are made over the phone. A spokesperson telling News 3 the center mostly provides 24/7 help with online issues from a live operator, a service it says continues to boost its bottom line.
Speaking of sales, trends are starting to emerge. The sales...good news for Zappos and the permanent employees they've brought on...pumping jobs into our economy.
The one downer is that Nevada doesn't require sales tax on online purchases from stores outside of the state.
Here are a few tips to help you shop safely.
- Make sure you see the "s" following the http.cybermonday-dot-com for deals.
- Pay with your credit card...so you have an easier time disputing charges.
- If you're using your mobile phone beware of what's called skimming. Skimming is to mobile phones what phishing is to e-mail.bottom line they're scams.
- A good rule of thumb if you haven't asked to be added to a store's e-mail list or updates is to delete it.
Zappos says Cyber Monday last year was its biggest sales day ever. As for this year, analysts say the interest in cyber Monday shopping is up 20 percent.
