LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Two people are now charged with trying to kill the Las Vegas Metropolitan police officer who stopped their alleged robbery spree.

Metro says officers were headed to the scene of an armed robbery when an officer saw what he thought was a fight outside a convenience store near Charleston and Lamb.

“A male subject who had been involved in the altercation ran behind the business,” said Officer Laura Meltzer. “The officer followed, and as he exited his vehicle, the male subject drew a handgun and fired at the officer, striking the officer's vehicle. The officer was not injured.”

It turns out the “fight” was an armed robbery, and police said the two people they arrested were also responsible for the robbery they were first headed to.

Police arrested 23-year-old Angel Montoya and 20-year-old Mayre Rosales.

Police said those suspects are connected to three robberies in total.

Two were reportedly at businesses and one person was held up in a parking lot.

According to police, robberies of people outside of buildings are up, at a time when we tend to be thinking of other things.

“We do know that during this time of the year, people are typically very busy. They're very distracted during the holiday season,” said Meltzer. “Trying to get their shopping done, or running errands, going from one point to another.”

Police said if you are going to be out shopping or running errands to be aware of your surroundings and put down that cell phone.

“Maybe get your face out of your phone, not be texting in the parking lot and not paying attention to the person that may be noticing you and noticing that you're distracted and noticing that you don't know what's going on around you,” said Meltzer. “It can make you a potential victim of a crime.”
