LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- The 18-year-old who brought a gun to a local school campus one week after the Sandy Hook shootings will be in court today.

Jake Howell, 18, is accused of bringing the gun to Northwest Career and Technical Academy, a school he used to attend,

He is facing gross misdemeanor counts of possessing a dangerous weapon on school grounds.

Police say they found an unloaded assault rifle in Howell's car, along with ammunition and several knives.

Howell says he was just there to visit some friends and denies being there to hurt anyone.

Investigators say a parent tipped them off about the gun.

It was later learned the FBI was investigating Howell because of connections he had to Steven Fernandes, 18, who also was on the radar of federal anti-terrorism agents.

The two claim to be part of a militia group they started.

Fernandes is already facing federal charges, including possession of firearms, explosives and making terrorism threats.

That is what I'm talking about, parents getting involved. I sure they have been having with their son and his behavior was questionable. I don't care kid, if you were there not to hurt anyone, its against the law to have a firearm on school campus, the parking lot is part of the campus.
