LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- A family tries to cope with the loss of a man and his son who drowned Sunday at Lake Mohave's Six Mile Cove near Cottonwood Cove.
Family members say 37-year-old Pablo Hernandez Cortez always put his family first, and they have no doubt his final breaths were spent trying to keep his 2-year-old son above water.
Holding a picture of her husband and son, Abelinda Espejel says Sunday’s tragedy happened so fast. They went for a walk and a swim along the lake.
Bystanders were the first to spot the pair and tried to give CPR.
Espejel says her husband didn't know how to swim. He died at the lake, but medics continued to give 2-year old Angel CPR as he was airlifted to UMC, where he later died.
According to Rangers, Angel was not wearing a life vest. Family members say he was, and it must have slipped off his tiny body.
While Rangers are trying to figure out what exactly happened, his family, including Pablo Jr. is left devastated. Pablo Sr. was the sole provider for their family. He leaves behind two sons, one of which has autism, and his inconsolable wife.
