LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Arson Investigators say that a fire that started in a vacant downtown building about 10:30 a.m. Saturday was intentionally set.

Firefighters were able to kept the fire to a minimum. There were no injuries.

Fire dispatchers were notified at 10:27 a.m. that there was a fire in a vacant building at 100 South 14th Street (on the corner of Fremont St). The building was once the Fremont Assisted Living Center.

When firefighters arrived, light smoke was coming out one window of room on the third floor of the three story building. Firefighters had to force entry into the building and ascended to the third floor. They found the fire in one room and quickly put the blaze out. They were successful in keeping the fire to one room only.

Fire investigators determined the fire started in two places in the one room and it was evident to investigators the fires were intentionally set.

The building is vacant but does still contain furniture, mattresses and other things normally found in an assisted living building. People who live in the area told investigators that people go in and come out of the building at all times of the day and night. There was evidence that homeless people are staying in the building.

Fire damage was confined to the one room. The only items that burned was two mattresses. The rest of the third floor had a smoke odor. Damage was estimated at $5000. The incident remains under investigation by Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.
