LAS VEGAS -- As part of Nevada Day celebrations, Governor Brian Sandoval is again hosting a statewide poster and essay contest for Nevada school children.

The contest is open to all Nevada school children in grades kindergarten through 12, in district, charter, private or home schools. This year’s theme focuses on American history.

The contest includes three categories depending on grade level. Students in grades K through 3 should create an 11 by 17 poster in any medium focusing on what they “believe is the most important event in American history.” Students in grades 4 and 5 should write a handwritten or typed essay of 250 words or less on what they “believe is the most important event in American history and why.”

Students in grades 6 through 8 should write a typed, double spaced essay of 500 to 750 words on how “an important event in American history still impacts our country today.” Students in grades 9 thru 12 should write a typed, double spaced essay of 750 – 1000 words on how “an important event in American history still impacts our country today.”

All entries must include the child’s name, address, grade, home phone number and school.

Entries should be mailed to Governor’s Constitution Poster and Essay Contest, P.O. Box 148, Carson City, NV 89702. All entries must be post marked no later than October 8, 2012.

An awards ceremony will be held in the Nevada Room at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City on October 27, 2012. If a winner cannot be present, their award will be mailed to their school.

Awards for each grade group are:
  • 1st Place, $100 gift card
  • 2nd Place, $50 gift card
  • 3rd Place, $25 gift card
Prizes were made possible through private funding.
