LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Several community groups this morning were among those looking to Clark County Commissioners to save the coroner's inquest process.
The American Civil Liberties Union, NAACP, Restore Trust Las Vegas, Latino Community Advocates for Civil Justice and Latino Democratic Caucus, along with members of victims’ families, were part of a news conference this morning at the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.
Topics discussed included why and how the inquest be should fixed; why the process can proceed without officers’ testimony if they claim the Fifth Amendment; and why the public and victims’ families deserve an open, transparent, balanced process.
The Nevada Supreme Court struck down the county's coroner's inquest process on Oct. 25, saying the revamped inquest process that put it under the supervision of a justice of the peace was not allowed.
The court said only the legislature can determine what justices of the peace do, not county commissioners.
