HENDERSON (KSNV MyNews3) -- A gunman was shot and killed by police this morning near a sports bar near St. Rose Parkway and Eastern.
Henderson police received a call at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night. A woman said her boyfriend was beating her and left the house with a gun.
Police went looking for the suspect and found him walking on St. Rose and tried to apprehend him. He took off and fell into a ditch, then held a gun to his head.
For two hours, police tried to talk him out of relinquishing the gun. According to police, the suspect then turned the firearm toward the officers, who then opened fire, killing him.
According to a release from the Henderson Police Department, officers then pulled the man from the ditch to a nearby parking lot. Paramedics, who were standing by during the standoff, rendered medical attention; however, the man died at the scene. The suspect’s 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.
The man was a registered felon with convictions in California for burglary and prison escape as well as a conviction in Nevada for larceny from a person. He was wanted on a warrant from Nevada Parole and Probation for absconding from probation.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the man after his family has been notified.
The officers were placed on routine paid administrative leave during the investigation of the incident. The officers involved are Officer Tyler Bailey, employed with Henderson Police since 2007, Officer Justin Dera, employed with Henderson Police since 2002, and Officer Jesse Lujan, employed with Henderson Police since 1997.
