LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- The Southern Nevada Health District could be closer to choosing its new leader.

Last month the health district's director of community health, Dr. Thomas Coleman, withdrew his application for chief health officer citing family matters.

The chief health officer is responsible for running the district.

The board met on Thursday to figure out what to do next.

Board members were upset when they heard Dr. Coleman withdrew his application but on Thursday the board voted on offering Dr. Joseph Iser the position.

Dr. Iser was the second most qualified candidate for the position according to the Southern Nevada Health District board.

He was the district health officer for Washoe County and before that he was a former director of public health, and a public health officer for both Nevada County and Yolo county, California.

At the meeting members were trying to figure out if they should start the process over again which could take four to six months, or offer the job to the next best candidate.

“I do believe having a leader is better than a leaderless community this size,” said board member Rod Woodbury.

Now the board will offer the position this week to Dr. Iser. The board will know if he decides to accept at the next meeting scheduled for next Thursday.
