LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Holiday shoppers are hitting the stores, but they're not alone. Criminals see this month as a key period to do what they do best.

Fashion Show Mall General Manager Jerry Irwin says not only is it Christmas season -- but it's also opportunist season.

“It’s very easy for somebody to grab something,” he said. “We call it a 'grab and run.' So, that obviously happens in every parking lot. It can happen anywhere.”

He's seen just about every trick in the book -- and he's getting shoppers ready for what could happen. And Irwin says the key is to hide things.

“Make sure if they’re carrying a lot of packages, put a lot of the smaller packages into the larger packages,” he said. “Take packages out to your car. If you do that, make sure to put them in your truck or someplace out of sight, so there’s no opportunity for someone to see inside the car.”

Be aware of your surroundings. You'll be jostling with many other shoppers crowding any sort of shopping place.

Following shopping safety tips extends to your computer screen as well. With many people doing their holiday shopping online, Internet crime has spiked to meet that demand as well.
