LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- If you are a homeowner in the city of Las Vegas you received an invitation in the mail in May to participate in a new program that provides insurance against costly sewer line repairs.

We sent News 3's Jerry Brown to find out if homeowners are signing up for this program.

City of Las Vegas public works director Jorge Cervantes says the new sewer line warranty program has proceeded so far without a hitch.

“it's been in place now about a month and a half since the program rolled out and there are 4,700 residents that have already signed up for the program,” Cervantes said.

The program provides the city with extra revenue.

Service Line Warranties of America is paying Las Vegas a $74,000 license fee and will give the city 10 percent of all revenues.

“we did a due diligence because over the years we have had a lot of companies that approached the city about wanting to partner with us to do this, we’ve always been skeptical about who we wanted to partner with, wanted to be sure it was a reputable company that does good work,” Cervantes said.

The goal of the program is to give Las Vegas homeowners some sewer security.

AA Cassaro Plumbing was the first local contractor accepted into the program.

Its manager told News 3 that the homeowners he regularly services have misconceptions about where their responsibilities begin and end when a sewer line goes bad.

“They think it is only on their property from the curb to the house, where in reality it's all the way to the center of the street or to wherever the main sewer connection is,” said Art Mercuro of AA Cassaro Plumbing.

“We see a lot of people where roots have entered the sewer lines, clogging up the residence, costing thousands of dollars to make the necessary repairs,” Cervantes said. "Some people call me and say does it make sense for me, and really that's a decision that they have to make.”

News 3 asked Cervantes if Las Vegas had approached Henderson and North Las Vegas about entering the program in tandem to possibly acquire a lower rate for valley homeowners

“We did,and actually they are looking at us to be the lead,so both of them have reached out to us and asked for information because they are interested in pursuing this, and so we have been in conversations with them," Cervantes said/ "Cervantes said. "They have kind of reached out to us and said we'd like to see how it goes in the city, but we are also interested in being a partner, and may be signing up ourselves.”

The program is already established in 170 cities nationwide.

If you are a las vegan homeowners the warranty will cost you $76 a year.

It's your call to make.
