LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- This Christmas Catholic Charities is serving meals to the homeless and hungry of Las Vegas.

For many it will be the only meal they have today.

At Catholic Charities on Christmas Day there are warm greetings of Merry Christmas and shared laughter over food.

Roberta Hunt and her son Elijah are enjoying their Christmas dinner. Roberta has a full time job but finds herself in hard times.

“Everybody is having trouble in this economy nowadays. Like I said I have a job and I can't even afford to pay rent. So I'm very blessed that there are places that will help us to get back up on our feet,” Hunt said.

She says it's an irony that she's here because she is a state tested nursing assistant.

“I take care of people for a living so it's kind of weird that I'm having to ask for help now because I'm usually the one that gives it,” Hunt said.

The executive chef planned a menu with turkey spaghetti and red wine, butter nut squash and red velvet cake. About 1,300 meals are being served today.

"It's actually a blessing. There's a lot of less people," Hunt said. "It's free. It's very hard to find anything free in Vegas.'

Catholic Charities has been serving meals to the community's homeless needy men, women and children since 1965.
