LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- After four years, sentencing day finally came for two brothers who pleaded guilty to robbing and killing a Henderson teacher. Jose Delatorre, 22, will spend a maximum of life in prison.  Juan Aguirre, 21, is facing a maximum of 35 years behind bars.

News 3's Krystal Allan was in the courtroom when the sentences were read.

Emotions ran high in a packed courtroom, the majority of those present were family, friends and former students of Matthew Cox.

Judge Valerie Vega handed down their sentences Tuesday morning.

Jose Delatorre was convicted on three counts but he ultimately received a life sentence and won't be eligible for parole for 18 years.

Juan Aguirre received a sentence that amounts to 35 years in prison and may be eligible for parole at some point.

The two also received credit for time served for everyone involved, they say it's been a long four years.

Making their case, the state said what Aguirre and Delatorre did was completely unnecessary.

The brothers knew Cox was going out of town and could have taken his stuff without killing him.

The state went on to say the irony in this is the one man the brothers killed is the one person who tried to help them.

In their defense, the brothers’ public defenders talked about Delatorre remorse for this act from the very beginning and accepting responsibility for what happened.

I agree with celticmistwryr. I am Matthew's mother. Those two murderer's said in the courtroom that they didn't know why they did what they did. Nothing was ever investigated on the missing choir money Juan was responsible for. Justice served? Try having someone murder your best friend, first born and only son and see if justice would be served when the murderer's parole comes up. They took the life of a truly good person who cared about other people. They even taped themselves having a party afterwards celebrating what they had done. They were only sorry they got caught. Jose had just gotten out of jail and Juan had been kicked out of all the other schools in the area along with being in and out of drug rehabilitation with his mom more than once. These are truly EVIL people which there are far too many in the world. We need stricter punishments so this type of thing happens less to your loved ones.

I am personally very happy with this verdict. I was talking to my partner recently, wondering what had become of this case. We were concerned it had been dropped or swept under the rug. Justice has been served. I was a barista at Starbucks, and was fortunate enough to develop a friendship with Matt. I still remember his drink. When his students came in to tell us that he had died, we were all in shock. RIP Matt, and know that justice has been served!

Remorse? Just how far does remorse go to restoring the life they took? Their remorse is that they were caught. Otherwise they would be reveling in the rep of being killers. Remorse is meaningless and an insult to the intelligence of any rational person. Corrections in this case MUST be limited to quarantining them, like the ebola virus, from the rest of us. My only objection is that they will be costing us money to quarantine them. Execution would be much better. We lose nothing, they would not suffer languishing in prison and we would save the money spent to incarcerate them.
