LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Students and parents are confused, even angered over a picture of a Las Vegas Academy of the Arts student dressed in a Ku Klux Klan costume on campus.

The Clark County magnet school is known for promoting social and cultural tolerance.

Some students say they were offended and shocked, but others say it's all been blown out of proportion.

It happened Jan. 9 when a teacher allowed students to dress up as the Ku Klux Klan for a social studies presentation. The teacher could now face disciplinary action.

The Clark County School District says this student just left social studies, where he and another student wore the white robes and gave a presentation on the historically racist and violent group.

In a recorded phone call to parents, Principal Scott Walker apologized and said in part: "In order to ensure that incidents of this nature are not repeated, we wish to assure our school community that we are reviewing our internal procedures and will convene with staff to ensure that all lessons meet the high standards you've come to expect from our school."

School District officials say they don't think the students involved will face disciplinary action but says the teacher could because the teacher is an employee. The School District says this is a personnel issue, so they won't tell us the teacher's name or let us know if the teacher is disciplined.

Talk about yellow journalism! First according to your biased spun newscast, the girl in the picture is horrified, but wait, she was actually laughing. You chose two freshman who have never taken this history to comment on a class they know nothing about, and search out for one of the few black kids at LVA for her opinion without knowing one thing about the classroom assignment? The way you spun this like kids at the best high school in Vegas are walking around like Grand Dragens on campus? Get your facts straight before you go on witch hunts please. When the student aid if this teacher is more articulate and intelligent than your writers, Houston, we have a problem. Maybe you should open up the adopted ccsd history book and know that the Klan has a few pages dedicated to their history included pictures. If you would taje a look st the divial studies curriculum, yiu would see that everything he did in his lesson is backed up in biack and white.Making history come alive in the classroom through a student dressed up makes a bigger impact than reading a book. You see at LVA, our kids are creative, passionate, and theatrical. This teacher just gave an option to dress up and present. They were given specific instructions to NOT wear costumes before or after class, so this in on the student ( who has been suspended) which you failed to report as well. I understand that when these pictures hit social media, the NAACP and other organizations went right to the superintendent wanting heads. As the superintendent is African American as well as the school board of trustee member Dr. Young, who represents LVA, they have to appease the community. So when we talk about terrorism, do we dare not to show pictures of Muslims? When we duscuss the Hocaust, do we not show the Swastica? We are so worried about offending people that teachers can't teach a powerful lesson about hate? The kid messed up, bottom line and he was suspended for it. The teacher is innocent and did nothing!

The school support and promotes tolerance on race but its seems that the project did exactly what it was intended, its shows how many still view the KKK as evil and not as just another organization promoting their belief. The KKK has the same rights as the Westboro Baptist Church and NAACP. Tolerance is within each individual, and its does not discriminate.

Student: No it is not the teachers fault, FOX. He was told to not wear it out of class. But the attention whore wanted to get the cool kids giggle and wear it out of class. The teacher that assigned this is the best teacher I've had - a teacher that teaches for the students. The dumb kid should be kicked out.

It's time to stop all this "PC" drama! Teachers have a tough job and student made poor choice. Time to move on.

I guess people would rather see thugs with their butts hanging out of their low down pants.

Personally, I think that the new school uniform is quite unique. All the other schools have the same old uniforms, this one does exactly what school uniforms are supposed to do. Make everyone the same. With these outfits it doesn't matter how big your tata's are, or how many zits you have. You look EXACTLY like everyone else. I think that more schools should enforce this dress code, in the end there would be less prejudice and hate. AMEN BRUTHA!!!

My son is a senior at LVA. He had this teacher for 3 different classes and this teacher has had the best, most positive influence on him. The teaching style of this teacher is second to none. This teacher is one of the best, if not THE BEST teacher in all of CCSD. The CCSD should NOT under any circumstance disipline this teacher. Political correctness in this country is going to be its downfall. The classroom is a place to learn, no matter the subject matter. Freedom of expression shouldn't be hindered by a select few who are too sensitive to be open minded about the cirriculum being taught. This whole matter is being blown out of proportion. I hope the CCSD reads the comments in this article and exercises common sense.

I am a senior at LVA and have been great friends with the teacher who allowed the student to do the project. The student chose the project and presented it in one of the three possible ways he could. The teacher specifically gave students time to prepare their outfits for presentation during class. I agree that the student should not have worn the costume outside of the classroom, the teacher has no control over that. On the otherhand, the student was RPCed and I think the only discipline he should have faced was a dress code violation. The student should be punished for wearing the costume outside of the classroom not for what he wore. Shame on Channel 3 News for their biased and completely nonsensical reporting. They are part of the problem in society for spreading missinformation as truth when it is trully just slander. As for the students who complained, none of them are students of the teacher and have absolutely no information regarding the project, especially since they have not even taken the course yet, as they are freshman and not juniors. Political correctness is simply the infringement upon one's right to freedom of speech (1st Amendment). People say you lose your rights when you enter school but on the other hand, we don't because students can start activist clubs and post posters around the school. The teacher should not be disciplined for anything whatsoever. I have been a student of the teacher for 3 different classes over my 4 years at LVA. He is possibly the best teacher I ever had because when I left his classroom I actually held on to the information which was discussed. As opposed to most teachers of the school who just write the notes on the board, this teacher administered his objectives through lecture/verbal interaction. Discplining this teacher will only be a hinderance on the education of the students. I will persist in the fight to prevent discplinary action against this teacher. For those who complained, shame on you.
