LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- A charity boxing gym is on the ropes after losing a state grant.

Now former boxing referee and longtime community leader Richard Steele is looking for help on his mission to get troubled kids back on the right track.

Steele says this gym, full of about 200 kids, are learning a whole lot more than boxing.

When a younger Marco “Carribeano” Russell came in for the first time, he says he was lacking direction,

“When you're a kid, you think you know more than your dad,” Marco said. “He was telling me the right things, but I didn't want to listen to him. I just thought I knew it all.”

Steele and this gym taught Russell the discipline to be successful. Now he's giving back and trying to make a difference in the lives of kids, like Steele did for him.

The gym teaches troubled children the path to bright future in and out of the ring. Classes on drugs, bullying and extra tutoring are there for those who need it. But Steele has found himself in a fight his training never prepared him for.

The state of Nevada took away more than $200,000 in grant funding he used to run the program.

If that happens it'll be the kids that suffer a crushing loss.

Steele and his team of coaches are hoping the community gets in their corner before the final bell rings.
