LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has released the name of the officer involved in the shooting of a suspect at an attempted armed robbery on Tuesday morning.
Officer Steven Lehmann, 34, has been employed with Metro since February 2009. He is currently assigned to Patrol Division, Bolden Area Command.
Metro reports that Lehmann arrived just after 2 a.m. at a convenience store in the 2000 block of North Jones Boulevard in northwest Las Vegas. He saw a male and a female exit the business in an excited manner who told him an armed robbery was occurring inside of the store.
The officer immediately approached the front of the business and saw a black male, later identified as Lawrence Howard, 19, of Las Vegas, pointing a handgun at the clerk. When the officer entered the business and challenged this suspect, Howard turned with the handgun toward the officer. The officer fired several rounds, striking and disabling the suspect.
Officers say Howard was immediately taken into custody and was transported by arriving medical units to an area hospital in critical but stable condition. He is scheduled for his court arraignment on Aug. 2.
A second suspect, 17, was discovered hiding under a counter and arrested. The case remains under investigation.
