LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- The season's first big snowstorm is slapping the Midwest, delaying or canceling hundreds of flights just ahead of Christmas.

McCarran airport is already feeling the ripple effects with flights coming in and going out.

Much of what we heard are success stories -- people who made it out of the Midwest just in time.

Some told us they got on Southwest's very last flight out of Chicago's Midway, but say they were preparing to camp out in the airport if necessary.

Airports in the windy city aren't the only ones dealing with storm delays and cancellations.

While delay frustration wasn't seen that much at McCarran, airport officials say it's a feeling that can be helped.

They say constantly checking your flight status can keep you out of the airport when you don't want to be there and in it when you do.
Airlines are monitoring this storm overnight to determine if any more flights will be canceled.

While airports are preparing for possible hiccups in travel this holiday season, so are local law enforcement.

Nevada Highway Patrol says they expect about 250,000 drivers to be in and out of Las Vegas over the coming days.

They're beefing up patrol with 60 more officers on the streets to catch anyone who may be out there driving too fast, drunk or distracted.
