LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3.com) -- A motorcyclist was killed shortly after 2 p.m. today when he collided head-on with a car being driven by an impaired driver at Cheyenne and Nellis in the northeast valley.
Metro Sgt. Richard Starder said the accident was reported at 2:14 p.m. in front of the Carefree Mobile Home Park in the 3200 block of North Nellis.
"The driver of the brand-new Ford Focus failed a field sobriety test and is being processed at CCDC (Clark County Detention Center) for felony DUI death right now," Strader said about 90 minutes after the accident as Metro's fatal detail investigated. He said alcohol was a factor and drugs may also be involved.
Strader said preliminary details show that the Ford Focus was going northbound on Nellis and crossed over the center line. The driver of the motorcycle attempted to avoid the car and put the bike down but was still holding the cycle when it hit the front of the car.
"It's a gruesome scene, it's not very pretty," Stader said. "He died before we got here."
Both drivers were males. No ages or names are available. The Clark County coroner's office will release the cause of death and name of the driver. Details on the driver of the Focus will be made public when the driver is charged.
Traffic was stopped in both directions on Nellis. Strader said motorists should avoid the area for the next several hours.
More than 150 people have been killed in motor vehicle accidents in Clark County so far in 2012.
