Coyote: The victim did not have any control. Nor did his family. If I implied that they did, it was unintentional. Of course the impaired driver is guilty of vehicular homicide at the very least. Did my comment indicate that I thought that he should get off the hook, or be given leniency,shown mercy? I think not. What I meant is he will NOT be shown mercy; the rest of his life will be hell. Yes, at least he gets to live. Yes, the victim won't have that option. If I were he, the punishment phase (even if given life) would be the least of my problems. It would be my concscience that would most torment me. Of course he should be punished. And he will be. His biggest punisher might be himself. Nancy, of course drunk drivers are a threat to us all. Had I lost a loved one this way, it is unlikely I would have any compassion for any impaired driver. But so many people have made this mistake. Are they all bad people? I just don't agree with that. Some are good people who have commited an atrocious act, never to be repeated again. Others are chronic offenders with zero regard/respect for life, neither learning from their mistakes nor caring. Whether this perpetrator falls into either one of these categories, or some category in between, I have no idea. I just know that I know people who are genuinely good & kind souls-- who have been behind the wheel when they shouldn't have, in the past. I don't have the answer. But, definitely, we need tougher punishments. My cousin killed someone on New Year's Eve 1998. He was out of prison in 6 years. And, he now has two more DUI's since then. He is walking around like nothing. No more jail time. It's a joke.

@ errborn it saddens me that you are so naive. Drunk drivers are a threat to everyone who uses our roads. We use our roads to get to work, to school, to buy food, and go to the doctor. The citizens of Las Vegas should not be in mortal danger just driving down the road. My own brother was killed on his way to work. Wearing his uniform, killed by a drunk who ran a red light at over 50MPH.

I was in that area at 2 pm Sunday. I do not drink but I have a more insidious problem with my vehicle. Department of Justice employees tamper with their suspect's automobiles with the intention of causing an accident. Corrupt and stupid is a deadly combination. They have been tampering with my car and I know they have been tampering with many other suspect's automobiles. They have loosened steering linkages, tampered with seats, put nails in tires, remove wheel weights, loosened lug nuts, disabled seat belt restraints, disabled anti-lock brake systems, stealing wear item parts with parts from personal automobiles(break pads, rotors, tires, etc...)... I have complained many times about DOJ employees tampering with my vehicle and because of that they poisoned my dog to death and started to use gang members to harass me. They think it is funny to tamper with my car. I fear one day several D.O.J. employees will be responsible for a automobile accident tat results in serious injury or death.

When are they going to make drunk driving a real crime!!!! These people get behind the wheel knowingly that they have been drinking and its against the law!!!! They go out and kill someone and at the most they will get is 10 years!!!!!!! What the hells the difference whather I pull out a gun and shoot someone, I can get life imprisonment!!!! This isn't a mistake or anything else, it is murder!!!! Its time all the drunks involved in politics make this a real crime, not a nanny law that excuses murderers!!!!!

Fry him? Meaning he should get the death penalty? The person made an awful, horrible mistake. One that he'll have to live with for the rest of his life and which will haunt him. I'm sure that he'll be punished in a number of ways, the least of which is whatever prison term he gets. But does driving impaired today make him scum? Almost everybody I know has driven impaired at least once in their lives. This could happen to anyone who has ever driven in an impaired state, even once. Personally, I would rather be the motorcycle driver than the Ford Focus driver. I can't imagine living knowing I had taken another life because I was drunk and/or high. For me that would be a living hell. I'm not saying that this guy deserves pity. But he has ruined his own life and others, which is a big price to pay for his lack of judgment getting behind the wheel in that condition.

the drunk went "over the center median " and hit and killed that poor man .. it was a extremely horrific scene.. something i hope that i never have to see in my life ever again.. i hope they fry this piece of scum..

nellis blvd is a divided highway, the impared driver crossing the centerline as reported in the story does not make sense.
