Sadness is thick in the street of a local neighborhood tonight where a child, identified as 7-year-old Jacob West, died in a house fire. Neighbors are telling us people tried to help before the fire department arrived but it was too late. News 3's Sandra Gonzalez joins us live from the neighborhood near Fremont and Eastern with more.

LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Neighbors are sad near the home where a child died Thursday in a house fire. A memorial is growing next door where he lived as children and families leave toys, notes, candles and other mementos in memory of 7 year old Jacob West.

The fire broke out Thursday at a vacant house where neighbors say a family had just moved out. Firefighters say children were playing with fire and it got out of control. At least three children may have been involved. All but one got out.

One that escaped came to a house next door as flames spread, and Teresa Hernandez describes a boy running with his hair on fire.

"The older brother came with smoke on his hair and he had been rolling on the ground trying to put out the fire on his hair. He was scared. And he was screaming that his little brother was still in there," Hernandez said in Spanish.

She says neighbors even tried to pry a gate open to get to the carport area where the boy was trapped. She says even the mother wanted to run inside to fetch her boy.

“I screamed at the mom don't go in there, because the house was engulfed in flames and she ran crying and kneeled down crying,” Hernandez said.

Both the police and fire departments say the fire was accidental. The child with the burns was taken to the hospital and was last listed in serious condition.
Neighbors are taking the incident very hard.

“For their lost it's very sad and it's going to be hard to forget about it because they're beloved kids and all that so basically the mother of the kids, it's going to take a while,” said neighbor Rafael Perez.

Hernandez says she could barely sleep, and that God sent a little angel to take the boy back to God.
