LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- The DUI arrest of Las Vegas Constable John Bonaventura -- coupled with what some call his suspicious spending and hiring practices -- have Clark County leaders looking to close his office and state leaders trying to reign in its power.

But other constables in Clark County are worried that Bonaventura's bad reputation may hurt their image, too.

Henderson Constable Earl Mitchell says that it’s time to toughen up the requirements for becoming a constable. Laws need to change for that to happen.

In the meantime, Mitchell says his office is benefiting from Bonaventura's troubles, getting some of his office’s old business.

In a pending lawsuit before the Nevada Supreme Court, Bonaventura argues the Henderson and Laughlin constable's offices are taking clients from what he considers his territory.

As for his DUI arrest, Bonaventura says he was under the legal limit. He adds his office should not be quashed because he was elected.

Nevada Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick says she is proposing a bill to make the constable's office more transparent, making it clear exactly who the constable has to report to.
