LAS VEGAS (KSNV Mynews3.com) -- Just hours after her crowning, Miss America 2013, Mallory Hagan of Brooklyn, N.Y., visited the USO Club at McCarran International Airport on Sunday as her first official act.

Hagan, 23, was the first Miss New York to win the title since Vanessa Williams in 1984.

She said she was glad to make the USO her first official stop in her reign.

"It's a wonderful tribute to our veterans and to the service they provide our country day after day," Hagan said. " I feel like we often don't give them the credit that they deserve so just a simple thank you is always helpful. I am so glad that my first stop is the ability to say thank you for the people that fight for my freedoms every day."

As for winning the title, Hagan said, "It's a multitude of feelings. It's 10 years in the making and it is also complete and utter excitement and enjoyment and I'm just thrilled to be here and to be of service to this organization for the next year."

Hagan won a $50,000 scholarship for her victory Saturday evening in the event at Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino.

"The Miss American organization has given me so much in the past 10 years. It has helped me advance my education and it has helped me grow into the young woman that I am today," Hagan said. "It's just an incredible honor. And I hope that I can do it well for the next 365 days."

Hagan's personal platform is stopping child sexual abuse.

Hagan defeated Miss South Carolina, Ali Rogers, who took second, and Miss Oklahoma, Alicia Clifton, who finished third.
