NORTH LAS VEGAS -- A 28-year-old North Las Vegas man was arrested Sunday after a six-hour standoff with police that caused several nearby homes to be evacuated.

Dustin Kent was taken into custody about 9:30 a.m. when SWAT officers entered the house where he had been holed up since shortly after 3:30 a.m.

The incident started when officers responded to a home in the 2100 block of Pipeline Beach Court, near Tropical Parkway and Losee Road, about a domestic battery report.

Arriving officers made contact with the victims, heard gunfire and began evacuating nearby homes.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Kent began arguing with his 24-year-old wife. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation in which Kent allegedly struck and pushed her to the ground as he pulled their 7-month old baby from her arms.

Two friends of the family arrived to assist the victim. Kent reportedly attacked them before they were able to evacuate the home with Kent's wife and child.

When officers arrived, Kent fired a handgun from the front door and retreated into the house where he fired additional shots. After several hours, SWAT officers made entry and took Kent into custody.

Kent was booked at the Las Vegas City Jail on two counts of domestic battery, two counts of battery, and one count of aiming or discharging a firearm where a person can be endangered.

Kent's wife and child suffered minor injuries. They were treated by medical personnel and released at the scene.
