Panels support Sandoval's $2.8B for K-12 education

CARSON CITY (AP) -- Legislative money panels have approved Gov. Brian Sandoval's budget proposal for K-12 education, establishing $2.8 billion in general fund support for the upcoming two years.

The actions Friday by the Senate Finance and Assembly Ways and Means committees largely follow what the first-term Republican recommended in his $6.5 billion spending proposal.

The plan sets per-pupil support at around $5,600, an increase of about $200 over existing funding levels.

All-day kindergarten will be expanded to 75 more schools, for a total of 201, with an addition of $80 million over the biennium.

Additionally, the budget earmarks about $50 million for English language learner programs.

Committee approval on the major budget items will be drafted into a bill. Lawmakers are pressing toward a June 3 adjournment.
