LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- A taxi hit and killed a California man who was trying to cross the street at Tropicana Avenue and Ocean Drive early Sunday.
A report by Metro's fatal accident detail said the accident occurred at 3:11 a.m. Sunday when a 2012 Ford Escape taxi traveling westbound on Tropicana in the left travel lane about 25 feet west of Ocean Drive struck a pedestrian who was outside of the crosswalk. The driver of the Escape was 24-year-old Michael Rockmaker of Las Vegas.
The pedestrian, an unidentified 48-year-old man from California, was thrown forward and came to rest in the roadway at the beginning of the left turn lane for westbound Tropicana Avenue to southbound Las Vegas Boulevard.
A 2010 Nissan Murano was headed westbound on Tropicana Avenue in the left turn lane behind the Fod. The driver, 40-year-old Karl Main of Las Vegas, was able to stop the Nissan, only making contact with the pedestrian with the underside of the front bumper.
The pedestrian was taken to UMC Trauma and later died of his injuries. No other drivers or passengers involved were injured.
The accident was the 76th traffic fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year.
