LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is warning residents about a jewelry scam that victimized an elderly woman.

The woman was shopping in the 2300 block of East Windmill Road around 1 p.m. Aug. 20 when she was contacted by two Hispanic suspects; one male and one female, who pretended they did not know one another.

The female stated she possessed loose diamonds which she wished to sell. The male suspect then obtained one of the loose stones and pretended to take it to a jewelry store while leaving his wallet behind as collateral. When he returned he displayed a large sum of money, claiming it was from the sale of the stone.

After obtaining the confidence of the victim with this sham sale, the two suspects worked together to lure the victim into believing she could profit by being part of the sale of the remaining loose diamonds. The suspects next convinced the victim to go to her bank and obtain a sum of money needed to purchase the diamonds for resale to the jewelry store.

The victim and suspects went to the bank, where, after withdrawing the money, the victim turned it over to the male suspect. The trio then returned to the shopping center parking lot where the male suspect left the vehicle, allegedly to sell another diamond which he had purchased from the female suspect with the victim’s money. A short time later the female suspect also made an excuse to leave the vehicle.

An investigation into this incident revealed no jewelry store existed within the shopping center, and the sale of the loose diamonds was a scam. It is believed the suspects originally thought the elderly female victim was Hispanic, and have targeted other similar victims with this scam.

The male suspect is about 50, 5-foot-3 and approximately 180 pounds with what was characterized as a “small beer belly.” He was last seen wearing a light-colored baseball cap and a dark, short-sleeved shirt.

The female suspect is about 30, 5 feet and about 120 pounds. She has brown, shoulder-length hair worn in a ponytail and was last seen wearing a light blue tank top and calf-length black workout pants.
