LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) --
As more is learned about the revamped procedure to handle deadly police shootings, police officers have a plan to handle these cases.
News 3 has confirmed officers who pull the trigger will be advised not to talk in a Fatal Police Review.
In a letter released Tuesday night, the Las Vegas Police Protective Association
says, "We recognize that you may want to explain your actions because you know you did nothing wrong. However, our attorneys believe that you face significant risk by forgoing your constitutional protections.
“Simply put: There is no upside to waiving your rights and testifying at such a hearing."
Not all lawmakers are on board with the new procedure from the Clark County Commission.
“The police association still says they're going to advise their members not to participate, so why did we change this?” asked Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani. “I think the public is the loser here. This wasn't about a win-win or a lose-lose; this was about doing the public's business in the public's eye.”
Commissioners have asked to revisit the process after the first three reviews to see how it's working.
