LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) — U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., and U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford introduced a bill Tuesday that would expand the Moapa Paiute reservation in Clark County by 26,000 acres.

If adopted, the bill would transfer the land into trust for the Moapa Band of the Paiutes near Logandale.

Another bill would add land into trust for seven Northern Nevada tribes — the Elko Band of the Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone Indians, the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribe, the Duck Valley Shoshone Paiute Tribe, the Summit Lake Paiute Tribe, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and the South Fork Band of the Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone Indians.

The tribes would be able to use the lands held in trust to build housing for their members, preserve their cultural heritage and provide opportunities for economic development.

Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., joined Reid in sponsoring the bill for the Moapa Paiutes. Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev., had sponsored a House version of the legislation last year.

In a prepared statement, Reid noted that before Nevada was settled by pioneers, prospectors and others, it was home to generations of Washoe, Western Shoshone and Paiute people.

“These first Nevadans have long been a voice for protecting our wild landscapes and enriching our state through their language and cultural heritage,” Reid stated. “Land is lifeblood to Native Americans and this bill provides space for housing, economic development, traditional uses and cultural protection.”
