LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Local football coaches are stepping up player protection this season.

This news comes on the heels of a concussion-related lawsuit between the NFL and former players.

It’s the start of a new football season at Rancho High School and coaches are not only making sure the players are performing on the field but that they also know what to do if they get hurt.

While athletes lace up their cleats, coach and league president Derrick Knox is lining playbooks with more defense against concussions.

Middle school athletes are required to show proof of a physical this year and Coach Knox is fitting his players with new custom helmets.

Parent Robert Howard and his son have both been diagnosed with a concussion while playing football.

"It does raise some concern but as long as you're not playing while concussed. I think it should be OK," Howard said.

University Medical Center’s Dr. Mike Casey says he’s seen about 60 athletes with concussions during the last three months.

Doctors recommend if players do get hurt or think they have a concussion that they notify their coaches right away to help prevent long term damage.
