LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- A new program launching in some of Clark County School District's lowest performing schools is designed to boost academic achievement.

News 3's Marissa Mike is at Ruben Diaz Elementary School to tell us about the Zoom schools program.

“The reality is, if you come in, not speaking English, it's hard to learn to read,” said Carolyn Edwards, the president of the Clark County School District board of trustees. “How do you learn to read if you can't understand the language.”

Edwards says zoom schools will help break the language barriers holding thousands of Nevada’s English language learners back.

“Each of these schools will the ability to offer pre-kindergarten and full day kindergarten for students with smaller class sizes, and then there will be reading centers so there will be an increased focus on learning to read,” Edwards said.

Edwards calls these key components to provide students with more support in gaining the reading skills needed to better understand the English language. This innovative program is expected to make a huge difference in the lives of our younger English learners.

The program is the result of a bipartisan effort by state legislators and Gov. Brian Sandoval.

“It's a really way to test if we can utilize resources to make a significant change in student achievement for this population,” Edwards said.

A population of students ready to learn, just needing the tools to help them succeed.

“They do want to learn,” Edwards said. “The best time to learn a language is when you're young. We're excited for the opportunity and we’re excited for our students.”

CCSD is considering offering free courses to keep lessons fresh in the children's minds. That decision will likely come before the school year begins.

The zoom school programs will begin at the start of the new school year on August 26.
