LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- Nevada state Sen. Tick Segerblom wants to get his hands on a list of doctors who are over-prescribing Oxycontin.

The drug is a powerful pain medicine. Its maker says it has a database of 1,800 doctors nationwide who are suspected of over-prescribing the medicine.

Segerblom says if any Nevada doctors are in the database they should face consequences, calling prescription drug abuse in the state an epidemic.

Josh, a former Oxycontin addict, says he took the medicine not for pain but to get high. He says the doctor who prescribed it to him did nothing to stop his developing addiction.

“People that are dependent are very, very good,” he said. “They know what to say. They know what barriers are going to be brought up.

“So much is dependent on the physician and their staff to know what to look for and to say ‘no.’ ”

Segerblom says he is waiting to hear back from the makers of Oxycontin. He thinks he will get access to that database since lawmakers from California also are asking for the information as well.
