LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- A state senator is speaking out to clarify his ties to troubled state assemblyman Steven Brooks.

Police say Senator Kelvin Atkinson was the whistleblower and the one who tipped them that Brooks may want to harm another lawmaker.

News 3's Mackenzie Warren has more on today's developments.

State senator Kelvin Atkinson says this saga should not be about him--or anyone else--but it's about helping a friend in grave need.

That friend being assemblyman Brooks, who tonight is trying to recover at a local mental health facility.

Atkinson suspected Brooks was a threat to Assemblywoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick and nine days after Brooks' initial arrest, Atkinson is explaining his decision to warn police for the first time.

"I had grave concerns for the Speaker's well-being and for Steven's safety as well," Atkinson said in a statemnet. "I did not want him to show up to the speaker's home unannounced and her to be caught off guard with a volatile situation. I did not want anyone getting hurt, including Steven. I wanted to get him off the streets and into an appropriate situation to seek help."

Brooks has been in-and-out-of-treatment and last Friday was legally committed after police say he threatened his mom with a sword.

That same day, Las Vegas City Councilman Ricki Barlow went public to explain his involvement.

Both Barlow and Atkinson question the North Las Vegas Police report. They say the cops got it wrong and Brooks' attorney Mitch Posin believes that will help his client.
