LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Today America honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In Las Vegas, a huge parade takes place downtown today in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

Wendell Williams, the founder of the parade, said his committee was informed that it has grown to the largest parade in the state.

The parade begins at 10 a.m., 4th Street and Hoover, heads north on 4th Street and ends at Ogden, and a record turnout is expected.

The celebration will continue with Dream Fest at the Edmond Town Center, on the corner of Owens Avenue and H Street, about 1 p.m. It will include food vendors, cultural merchandise vendors, a car show, entertainment and family-friendly activities.
The theme for this year's festivities are “Living the Dream,” dream with a vision and live with a purpose.

The parade has been going strong for 31 years. The parade started back then with just 13 entries. This year, some who wanted to participate had to be turned away.

The parade concludes a week's worth of events honoring King, from an education forum to a scholarship dinner.

It underscores the committee's goal to invest in the next generation and bring attention, through these events, to some of the issues still impacting this community years after Dr. King's work.
